Soldier Surprises Son after Year Overseas.

8-year-old and his father become the perfect lesson about Veterans Day.
When Thomas Edwards told a packed assembly Monday about how proud he was of his Army dad, he wasn’t expecting to see him for weeks.
“If he comes home on Thanksgiving and the party was going on, we’re just celebrating it the day after,” the 8-year-old said.
The assembly was part of Ridgewood School’s lesson on Veterans Day. But as soon as Thomas saw his dad walk through the gym doors, he ran through the crowd.
“You should of told me,” he cried as he ran into the arms of his father, Jeff Edwards.
“I thought it would be kind of neat to surprise you,” Jeff Edwards said.
This was Jeff’s first day home after spending a year in Iraq. He had spoken to his son on the phone earlier while in Maine, but kept up the ruse to surprise him.
“I needed one of these,” Jeff Edwards said while hugging his son. “It’s been a long time, huh?”
Before his father’s surprise appearance, Thomas told his classmates he wants to be in the Army just like his dad. “I’d want to help other countries like my dad and like take his place.”
Students are making cards for veterans this week, and Headmaster Jeanne Kunay said the reunion provided a worthwhile lesson.
“We hoped that the other students would see how important family is; but also to see how important it is we honor our servicemen, especially around Veterans Day,” she said.
Now that his father is home safely, Thomas said he hopes other military children remember it’s worth the wait to see your parents.
“It’s really sad when he’s gone, but eventually he comes home and you can celebrate,“ he said.
